Blog > Home Improvements To Avoid Falls

The elderly are more likely to fall in their own home and some won't be able to even get back up. If someone isn't there to help them, or they are unable to reach the phone, it could be dangerous to their health. There are a few ways to modify your home so your senior loved one won't have to worry about taking a hard fall.

  1. Handrails

You should install handrails where there is a stairway or a hallway where a senior might need help walking through. If you have wooden or tiled floors in your home, it's always good to have a railing nearby that your elderly loved one can hold on to for extra support.

  1. Grab bars

The bathtub and shower can get pretty slippery when you're not careful. Install a couple of grab bars to have more control and support when getting in and out of the shower. Try to avoid the grab bars that stick on to the shower tiles, it's better and more reliable to install the metal grab bars that are attached to wall studs in your bathroom.

  1. Improved Lighting

You want to make sure lighting is adequate throughout your home in order to prevent any falls. Getting night lights for the bedroom and bathroom are great because they give off just enough light in order for you to see where you are going.

  1. Non-slip mats and treads

These mats can prevent you from slipping on your bathroom floor, the patio deck or even outside steps. Make sure you place a non-slip mat in your shower to avoid falling.

  1. Step & floor repair

It's crucial that you keep your floors and steps in your house stable. If you see any loose wall-to-wall carpeting or uneven floorboards, it could lead to people losing their balance. Hire a handyman to get your floors fixed to avoid this issue.

  1. What you can do now

You can take action now to keep your home clutter free. Rearrange your furniture so there is a clear pathway to walk through.
